Two conjectures and why I know they are false

I have had the benefit of working with Tony on many different problemsin lattice statistical mechanics and combinatorics --- particularlyconcerning self-avoiding polygons. During this time I have learnt anumber of general methods from Tony that I am currently applying toa range of problems off-lattice.In particular, I have recently started looking at problems inpattern-avoiding permutations which arise in problems in computerscience and algebraic combinatorics. In this talk I will discuss tworecent conjectures in this field and demonstrate, using some Tony-esquetechniques, why I know they are false.
